Useful Art: Breathing New Life into an Old Ugly Thing

Do you have a piece of pesky furniture that is kinda cruddy and drives you crazy?  I did.  I have this little table that has moved around from one apartment to another, always not quite fitting in.   It was pretty beat up and was quite often considered for garbage, but it was always the perfect table for a plant, or some such thing.  It also belonged to my grandmother, and while I don’t typically have sentimental attachment to things like furniture, I just always hung on to this thing.   It had been long enough and I was tired of it’s creepy brown color and odd stains.  I decided to make it something much more enjoyable to look at.    Sometimes, an old ugly thing can have a little more life to breathe if just given the chance.  Think twice, and make something funky out of an old something lying around your house, come on!

  1. Cool Beans Al… What a nice transformation. There was a woman who did this kind of thing out of the Stoughton Studio when I was there…I almost thought it was hers until I recognized the piece of furniture. Where are you finding all this Artsy Time?

    • Got any ugly furniture that needs a re-charge?! If you are willing to let me experiment that is! 😉

I do little bits at a time…when you turn your dining room into your art “studio” or rather, “disaster” you can get some things done! 🙂

  5. All I can say is WOW Ali! Fucking WOW!

I know art isn’t about making money but really dude you could get serious dough for pieces like this. I’ve seen this kind of refurbished furniture sell for a lot in small boutiques around town. It’s hard to believe the person who created this is a grants manager by day 🙂

    The girl’s got talent!

  6. You’ve just given me inspiration to update my old beat-up shoe-polishing step stool. I love it but keep it hidden because it’s embarrassingly ugly.
